The Well

Did I hear some laughter?

The shadows bled

Did I hear some laughter?

Down in the well

Went to the well to douse this love

There was no water vessel

Went to the well

To wish for love

No spare change in my pocket

Did I hear some laughter?

Did it come from my throat?

I heard the laughter

It couldn’t come from my throat

Went to the well still as stone

Dried flowers in my hand

Went to the well to be alone

To water this old plant

I heard the laughter

Dead flowers in dead hands

I heard it after

I broke its crooked stems

I went to the well to cast a spell

For all the love sick ones

Went to the well to cast a spell

And threw the flowers in

I heard the laughter

From the flowers in the field

We were laughing at

How much more now is revealed

Went to the well

To feel the world

And play around unbound

Looked in the well to see the water

My face was in the clouds

Went to the well

And I heard the laughter
