We Were Never Kings

When the last selfish cry
And the rotting smell of pride
No longer sates the air
The final lonely fool has no grip
Has no a lover or saviors of worship
He sails and sinks in one fatal tide
Gulping the sunless sea of buoyant life

We were never kings
We were never kings
We were never kings
As we were never kings
You are not a king

She lies in the lovegrass of the plains
At last she lies alone
She feels a new tremor of life
She sees how it used to be

She is emergent with the trees
Breathing clouds with the canopy
She falls without sunlight
With the rain she moves the ground
She sits and watches water rise
Flowing where it wants to go
And begins to float and dream
Washed clean and free

She sits atop the world
Where only water lives
The nights exhilarate her eyes
The sky is her mind

She walks hot in the sand
She hears whispers in the wind
She rests in Cheops shade
She knows these wonders will fall

We were never kings
We were never kings
We were never kings
As we were never kings
You are not a king
